A travel trailer (caravan trailer) is a unit without its own engine that connects to your car via a tow bar and houses basic living spaces such as sleeping, cooking and a bathroom. As camping culture has spread rapidly in Turkey, it has become the most accessible way to own a caravan.
How does it differ from a motorhome?
In a motorhome, the living space and the vehicle form a single body. In a travel trailer, the two are separate. The practical results are:
- You stay free at the campsite. You can leave the caravan on the pitch and drive into town with your car to do your shopping.
- Maintenance costs are low. The caravan has no engine, gearbox or exhaust; there are far fewer periodic maintenance items.
- You can park it when not in use. Your car continues to be a normal automobile in everyday life.
- The entry cost is more affordable. For the same interior volume, it is significantly more economical than a motorhome.
Which licence is needed to tow it?
This depends on the maximum laden weight stated on the caravan's registration and on your towing vehicle's figures; not on the model name. The general framework is as follows:
- If the trailer's maximum laden weight does not exceed 750 kg, a class B driving licence is sufficient.
- If it exceeds 750 kg, as long as the towing vehicle + trailer total does not exceed 3,500 kg, it can still be towed with a class B licence.
- Above this total, a class BE licence is required.
Before buying, we recommend placing side by side and calculating the weight figures on the registration of both the caravan and your towing vehicle. The maximum towable trailer weight stated on your vehicle's registration is also binding.
What to look for in a first caravan?
- Body structure: water tightness and thermal insulation directly determine the caravan's lifespan. GRP (CTP) sandwich panel bodies stand out here.
- Chassis and axle: a galvanised chassis protects against rust. A braked axle is important for towing safety.
- Bed layout: decide between fixed bed, bunk or folding bunk according to how many people will travel.
- Water and electrical capacity: the fresh water tank volume and the scope of the 12V/220V system determine how long you can stay off-grid.
- Service and spare parts: the manufacturer's warranty period and spare parts commitment make a difference in the long run.
