When buying a caravan, the most discussed topics are furniture, bed layout and kitchen equipment. Yet the factor that really determines whether the vehicle will still be sound ten years later is the body structure. The structure we choose in Avcı Karavan production is the GRP-clad sandwich panel.
What is a sandwich panel?
A sandwich panel, as the name suggests, is a three-layer structure: a rigid skin on the outside and inside, and insulating filler in the middle. In Avcı Karavan bodies:
- Outer and inner skin: GRP (glass fibre reinforced polyester)
- Filler: 35-density polyurethane
This trio forms a load-bearing shell that works as a single piece.
Why GRP?
- It does not rust or rot. The corrosion seen in metal sheets and the rot risk seen in wooden frames are eliminated.
- High hail and impact resistance. It is markedly more resistant to impact than thin aluminium skins.
- Its surface is easy to clean. The smooth gelcoat surface does not hold dirt and returns to its original appearance when washed.
- It has few joints. The panel structure reduces the number of junctions, the points with the highest risk of water ingress.
What do the wall thicknesses mean?
In our models, panel thicknesses are applied as floor 50 mm, roof 34 mm, wall 34 mm. The floor being thicker is no coincidence: it is the layer that cuts the cold coming from the ground and, at the same time, carries the furniture and living load. In the LuXon series, the outer shell is produced as a 33 mm GRP sandwich.
In practice, these thicknesses directly affect the energy you spend heating the interior in winter and the need for air conditioning or ventilation in summer.
Why is there a water-tightness warranty?
The most common long-term problem in caravans is water ingress. Because a panel body and correct sealing minimise this risk, we provide a 5-year water-tightness warranty on our products. In addition, we offer a 2-year manufacturer's warranty and a 10-year spare parts commitment.
